Finals, any ideas?

I always struggle to come up with a new, challenging final exam. I don't know about you, but I like to change my exams every year, just to keep the job "fresh". I also want the test to be interesting and challenging to my students. The end result should look like a work of art. In my district writing has to be included in our exams, which I believe is a great idea, this allows students the opportunity to explain their message both visually and written. I have to cover everything that has been done since the beginning. Line, shading, design, collage, graffitti, and so much more. I suppose I can let them choose a topic from the projects that have been done in class.
My advanced class has had different topics this first semester, I basically have to come up with three different final exams.
I've already reviewed the projects with the kids, I just have to come up with the final format.
I don't want to dig up an old exam, any ideas?

  1. I'm new to HS art so it is so nice to finally find a blog geared toward this age level! Never having to do a final with younger students before made it hard for me this year too. I had them research an artist of their choice (with my approval). Some chose very famous artists, others chose artists that are still living, but creating art that inspires them. They created an informational, yet visually appealing poster about the artist and are now in the process of creating a work of art that is unique but in the style of that artist. So far so good. To incorporate the writing aspect they are going to conduct a self-evaluation/reflection of their art.

  2. Thanks for the suggestion, I use this particular project for my Art 2 kids and they have to do it in book form. Can't wait to see your site.

  3. The website is a meager start so far, more of a thought than a reality. I am in a grad class, have 2 kids and the first year at this school, so even though it is on the list it doesn't have more than a few tidbits of information on it yet. Thanks for the book idea, I like to vary things from year to year so I don't get bored.
